What a surprise !! I discovered that this artist took pictures of Madagascar rituals !!!! :D
In order to receive the blessing of the ancestors, without which you can't have a good life, the ethnic group inhabitings malagasy highlands open their family graves from time to time and bring out the dead to dress them in new shrould. We call that the famadihana. This reburial ceremony is held during the cooler half of the year, when the dead are said to be freezing in their graves, and therefore need new clothing.
My grandsparents ( from my father ) have been "returned" in 2007 ...
